FYSA Grateful for Legislative Support Amidst Background Check Uncertainty

[FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE]

[Auburndale, FL, April 26, 2024] – In response to significant confusion and uncertainty surrounding background
check requirements for youth sports in Florida, the Florida Youth Soccer Association (FYSA) is pleased to
announce a pivotal legislative amendment that extends the compliance timeline for sports organizations
statewide.

Recognizing the paramount importance of participant and volunteer safety, FYSA has long advocated for a
transition from Level 1 to more comprehensive Level 2 background checks. However, navigating the
implementation of the legislation passed in 2023 has been marred by conflicting advice from compliance
professionals and background check companies.

Over the past six weeks, the confusion over effective dates and implementation has posed significant
challenges for FYSA and other youth sports organizations across the state. Fortunately, during the recent
Legislative Session in Tallahassee, the original sponsors of the 2023 legislation intervened to address these
concerns.

State Senator Erin Grall of Fort Pierce and State Representative Dana Trabulsy of Port St. Lucie demonstrated
exceptional leadership by successfully amending the statute to provide an additional six-month grace period for
compliance. Their decisive action not only alleviated the compliance burden for FYSA but also ensured the
continued safety and integrity of youth sports in Florida.

With the extension granted by Senator Grall and Representative Trabulsy, FYSA and its affiliated organizations
can now confidently prepare for a successful and safe 2024 summer sports season. FYSA expresses their
gratitude to Senator Grall and Representative Trabulsy for their invaluable contributions in safeguarding the
future of youth sports in Florida. For more information, please contact:
